Tinnitus Awareness Week

Moving the World Toward A Cure!
May 18 - 24, 2008

Write a Letter to the Media

One way you can raise awareness is by contacting editors and news desks at nearby media outlets. Your local and community newspapers, television and radio stations are all great places to contact to help spread the word about the urgent need for more tinnitus research. You can download this sample letter (link goes to a Word document) to contact the media about the importance of tinnitus coverage.

Request a Proclamation

American Tinnitus Association volunteers are busy writing to their mayors asking to have Tinnitus Awareness Week officially proclaimed by their city. Hurray for these volunteers!

You can get involved by building tinnitus awareness in your hometown and even your state. Simply write to your mayor, city council or governor and request a proclamation for Tinnitus Awareness Week 2008. This involves three central steps:

1. Find your mayor, city council or governor's office in the blue pages of your local telephone book or at the following resources:

http://www.loc.gov/global/state/stategov.html
http://www.statelocalgov.net/index.cfm

2. Call the official's office to find out to whom you should address your request. (Often, it's someone in the public affairs and information department.) Be sure to mention that you can provide suggested wording for the proclamation.

3. Send your version of the following letter and the sample proclamation to your mayor, city council or governor, customizing it with a brief personal account of your tinnitus experience.

Send in your request for a proclamation as soon as possible! Tinnitus Awareness Week is coming up fast! Your elected official’s staff will want to review and approve the text and may suggest changes, so leave enough time for discussion.

An Advocate's Perspective

donna_brownHere is one tinnitus advocate’s testimony of how she succeeded in getting the state of Colorado to declare May 21, 2008 as " Tinnitus Awareness Day." Last July, Donna Brown proved her passion and commitment to raising awareness of the urgent need to find a tinnitus cure by successfully climbing Mt. Rainier in Washington State. Her climb raised research dollars for ATA and tinnitus awareness in her own state. Donna, your friends at ATA thank you for your dedication to the mission of the organization.
